Today, January 16, 2012, we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is only fitting that America honors this extraordinary individual. Many of us know that Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize, played a key role in the March on Washington in 1963, where he delivered the amazing "I Have a Dream Speech", and was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed into law. (Read more about Dr. King's life here.) Throughout his life, Dr. King used his talents to serve others. He even paid the ultimate price - his life - to help all Americans achieve equality.
Dr. King once proclaimed in a speech that "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." Dr. King's greatness comes from what he did to advance the civil rights of all Americans, not from the speeches he made. Today is a perfect time for us all to reflect on our lives. We should all think about how and who we can serve.
We may never experience the level of fame and celebrity that Dr. King has. However, as someone one shared with me, one person can make a difference. Think about what you can do today to serve others. Think about how you can help yourself and others have a New Life Today!
1 Peter 4:10 New International Version (NIV)
10 Each of you should
use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful
stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
